About FemSex

Mission Statement: The Female Sexuality Workshop is a semester long, not-for-credit program that aims to create a mindful, respectful, and open environment.  Participants can engage in honest dialogue in order to validate their own experiences and build solidarity within a community of new people founded upon participation and reciprocal commitment. Through group discussion and independent activities participants build ally relationship and camaraderie.  They explore and take ownership of their own bodies, pleasure and education. FemSex is a unique space designed to facilitate the exploration of boundaries, desires, identities, and experiences. We hope to build a community of FemSexies who can serve as active allies to themselves, each other, and a diversity of people.  Peer facilitators encourage and challenge participants to continue to develop empowered and informed relationships with themselves to bring out into the world.

Topics: The workshop topics include: anatomy and physiology, orgasms, masturbation, partner sex, BDSM, fantasies, pornography, sexual diversity, cultural influences, female sexual health, communication and consent, boundary violations, and community building. Set in the context of self-love, exploration and the spectrum of sexual identities, the objective — individual and female empowerment — will be achieved through the discussion of analytical readings, self-exploratory assignments, guest speakers and group activities.

Our History: FemSex was born in California, at UC Berkeley in 1993 and was initially a for-credit course in a department dedicated to student-run classes.  FemSex started up on the east coast in 2003, brought to Brown by a graduate student who had attended the workshop during phe’s undergraduate study at Berkley.  Since coming to Brown, FemSex has been passed under the guardianship of many passionate and committed coordinators and facilitators.
